ARTIST INTERVIEW: Diana Upton-Hill

"Whatever you do, do love well. Whatever you say, say to change somebody's day."

Full Name:
Diana Lynn Upton-Hill

Age:
As my mom always says, “A lady never tells.” ;)

Hometown/currently live:
Homebase is Southeast Iowa, now it’s Nashville and the road.

What made you want to start writing songs?
I suppose I wrote my first song around age 4 or 5. At that time it was all about what I could see immediately in front of me, or at least could picture clearly in my mind’s eye. The earliest song I recall writing was called “The Trees in the Woods”. It was pretty simple, of course, and I think I listed off things found in the forest like deer and flowers and such. I was lucky enough to even have recorded it in my stepfather’s home studio. I’ll have to try and find that recording!

Do you play any instruments?
I play a little piano and guitar, but never learned as well as I would have liked. Flute was my main instrument through school, and I still play it quite a bit.

Did you teach yourself?
No, I’ve always enjoyed learning from others.

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
My mom and dad, definitely. They both are quite musical and always supported my habit - ha! As far as “famous” musicians go, early on I was OBSESSSED with Madonna. She’s such an amazing entertainer. Martina McBride is someone I truly look up to as a singer and recording artist. Then there’s Alyson Krauss, who can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned, and I ADORE Jewel. Yes, Jewel has been a huge inspiration for me when it comes to really connecting to the words in a song and bringing them to life with your voice. Our voice is our instrument as singers, you know? We should use it like one.

Where do you get inspiration to write your songs?
Everywhere. Nature might be the most romantically-inspiring, but I find myself drawn to man-made items as well. It’s inspiring to see what we as people can create into “things”. Aside from locations, I’d have to say that I, unfortunately, write best when I’m a bit blue. We artists are often an emotional bunch, and some of our best work comes out in the darkest times. I don’t want to sound negative, though. There’s nothing better than sitting out on my back porch, sipping on some lemonade and penning a new song. Ahhhh, that sounds just lovely.

Favorite songs you have written/co-written?
That’s a trick question! I actually have a love/hate relationship with most of my songs. Ha! I love working with Mitch Goudy and co-wrote one of his singles, “Ain’t My Fault”, which is pretty fun. As far as my songs go, on my most recent album Mitch and I co-wrote “Aim’s Gettin’ Better”. I like wordplay a lot, so that one was super fun.

What moment in your music career is your favorite so far?
I have been so blessed with incredible “moments”, but doesn’t it seem like the most recent ones are always a bit sweeter? Working with Bryan White as my producer on this latest project has been amazing. He’s not only wildly brilliant as a producer, but also truly sensitive in ensuring that each song’s spirit it captured and conveyed through the recording. And let’s not even talk about his harmonies. I just can’t.

Finish this sentence…if I could write a song for or with anyone I would choose
Jewel.

Where do you see yourself in a year?
A year: Promoting my album and spinning a couple singles on the radio across the country.

5 years:
I tend not to look that far down the road. If I said “New York”, I’d end up in L.A. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with either place. I know I’ll be doing whatever, wherever that God wants me to - and that, to me, is what’s important. :)

If I weren’t a songwriter I would be…
Well, I don’t really see myself as a songwriter, primarily. That’s something I feel that I do as a supplement to my life as a musician/entertainer. If I weren’t a musician, though, I think I’d be a psychologist. I have a minor in Psych, and it’s still something that intrigues me every day.

I’m afraid of...
losing control of things. That’s probably why I’m such a neat-freak.

I never get tired of...
taking care of things. My parents and grandparents - even my church - always stressed the importance of stewardship. If you have something, take care of it. Doesn’t matter if it’s pricey or inexpensive. Value everything. Waste not, want not. You know the drill. :)

Okay, I always ask people to tell me one thing about themselves that is random or strange that most people don’t know.
I really dislike the taste of ginger. It’s something I wish I liked because it’s in so many great foods, but - sadness - I just don’t care for it at all.

What made you want to start singing/writing?
I just kinda fell into it.  I've played guitar in multiple bands over the years, but I honestly never imagined things would end up like they have! I worked for an entertainment company in South Georgia and my boss asked me to fill in for an artist who cancelled a show. So, I went to the venue knowing only 7 songs and having to play for 3 hours.  Somehow I made it through the night! After the show a man walked up to me and asked me to play at a party he was having and I was completely shocked.  So I began playing around town and experimenting with simple song writing.  Next thing I know, I'm moving to Nashville, writing with some amazing songwriters, and blessed enough to tour regularly across the US. Its been a journey, that's for sure!

Do you play any instruments? Did you teach yourself?
Guitar and yes, I am self taught

Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
Man, this is the toughest question that can be asked of me for interviews haha. I've always listened to a variety of music.  Of course with Luke Bryan being from my hometown area and with me graduating from the same high school as Cole Swindell (Terrell Academy), those guys have had a huge influence in my music.  But growing up I listened to everything from Justin Timberlake to George Jones to Metallica.

Where do you get inspiration to write?
Everywhere and anywhere. The first song I ever wrote was about as cliche as it can get. But it was about what I knew and it expressed how i felt, and to me that's what writing is all about.  That first song gave me the inspiration to improve my writing!

Do you have a favorite song that you’ve written or co-written?
I would have to say it would be "I Get It Honest"  It's a song that will appear on my EP Album this year.  Its about my grandfather so it means a lot to me.  It was co-written with Todd Hanchock.

What moment in your career is your favorite thus far?
This past year I was honored to win 2014 Country Male Artist of the Year at the Georgia Music Awards.

Finish this sentence, If I could write a song for or with anyone I would choose….?
I would choose to write a song for Jason Aldean.

If I could sing a song with anyone I would choose….?
Katy Perry, for sure. haha

Where do you see yourself in a year?
Hopefully picked up by a publishing company and still touring!

If I wasn’t a singer/songwriter I would be…?
Somewhere in the business side of music for sure.  Marketing is definitely a passion of mine!

I’m afraid of…?
SPIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never get tired of…?
Waking up and getting to do what I love everyday!

What is one thing people may not know about you?
I'm VERY claustrophobic.

We are a month into the new year, what does 2015 look like you for? New music? Festivals? Etc.
We have an awesome tour lined up for 2015 and cant wait to hit the road February 11th! Some big shows with artists like Jerrod Niemann and Eric Paslay, as well as the opportunity to headline venues like The Grizzly Rose in Denver, Colorado! I will be releasing a six song Ep Album, so make sure to be looking out for that! Its going to be an awesome year!

What made you want to start writing songs and singing?
A lot of it has to do with my dad. He was a songwriter and an artist when he was about my age, and he always talked about it. When he would go out of town for business trips, he would leave us with an old cassette of him and his band and we would fall asleep to it so we didn’t miss him so much. He would make up songs on the spot about getting us dressed in our pajamas or songs about our belly buttons and just about life things. I grew up around that sort of creativity. I started singing as soon as I could talk, and when I was seven I was in my first musical with a solo. I wrote songs in middle school but didn’t tell anyone because I was already a ‘weird girl’ and didn’t want to make myself a bigger target– then I went to high school and met my friend Bella. Her dad is in the music industry and was working with huge acts in the country industry at the time, and her love of music and songwriting made me realize that I wasn’t a total odd ball. There were other people like me! yay! We had a notebook that we passed back and forth in between classes filled with lyrics and us fixing each others songs and helping each other with ideas and advice– I think that’s when I really started to grow and realize that I could do what I loved and not worry about what everyone else thought.

Do you play any instruments?
I do! I play the violin/fiddle, guitar, and piano and am currently teaching myself the banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and mandolin.

Did you teach yourself?
I was classically trained in violin for 9 years, and took on/off piano lessons for about 6 or 7 years. Because violin is such a difficult instrument to play, it was SO easy to teach myself other stringed instruments like the guitar. I’m still teaching myself things on the banjo, ukulele, harmonica, and mandolin and love learning new stuff everyday.
Who are your biggest musical inspirations?
I grew singing Shania Twain and Martina McBride all.the.time. – I will always love those artists. Also, I’d be lying if I didn’t throw Taylor Swift into the mix – she’s just a powerhouse and represents women in the industry so well.
Where do you get inspiration to write your songs?
A lot of my inspiration comes from situations I’ve been through, or situations that my best friends have been through – typical. I’m always honest with my lyrics, but the thing that I love the most about being a songwriter is that you can be whoever you want to be.

Favorite songs you have written/co-written?
What about 18 from my last EP is a song that will always be close to my heart. It’s extremely personal and it’s kind of my way of giving my younger friends, family, and fans advice on not growing up too fast.
Also, a song called Enemies that I wrote with my friend Emily Waynt is a favorite. Right now, everyone is rooting for a girl takeover in country music, but there are some girls that you run into that are on their own team, and use you to social climb, and those people just don’t really sit right with us, so we wrote a song about it! It’s SO sassy. Hopefully I’ll release it soon!

What moment in your music career is your favorite so far?
I was given the opportunity to tour the UK last summer and I started singing one of my songs, and every single person started singing it with me. That was a surreal moment. I ended the tour in London, and we all huddled in a circle and I thanked everyone for travelling to see me, and for singing along to songs that I had written in some of the hardest times of my life. That’s a favorite. For sure.

Finish this sentence...if I could write a song for or with anyone I would choose______.
For: Danielle Bradbery With: Hillary Lindsay

Finish this sentence...if I could sing a song with anyone I would choose______.
JAMES TAYLOR.

Where do you see yourself in a year? 5 years?
In a year, I’ll be in my last semester as a college student – I want to graduate with honors, so I’m really focusing on that right now. I would love to snag a pub deal in 2015 if that’s in the cards for me. In 5 years, maybe I’ll be married or engaged, but either way, I hope to be touring and hugging lots of fans – whether that’s opening for someone, or headlining my own tour. I just want to be doing what I love, and I’ll do whatever it takes to get me there.

If I wasn't a singer/songwriter I would be...
LORD, I don’t even know! If I wasn’t a songwriting major, I would have gone to college undeclared, so who knows what I’d be studying.

I'm afraid of ______.
elevators

I never get tired of_______.
Breakfast food. I think it’s my love language if we’re being honest here.

Okay, I always ask people to tell me one thing about themselves that is random or strange that most people don’t know!
I used to live and breathe sports. I played basketball & softball for 9 years, ran cross-country, played soccer, and swam. You name it, I probably played it, haha! I was on two Varsity teams in high school, but then decided music would make me happier in the long run, so I opted for that route in college.
