CONCERT REVIEW: Sam Hunt

Sam Hunt // [3.26.2015]
York College // York, PA

The last few times Sam Hunt has been to the MD/VA/PA area, you wouldn’t have been able to snag a ticket the day, week, or even month of the show because he had already sold out the venue. We lucked out Thursday night. Mr. Take Your Time was performing at York College and I don’t think there was much off campus advertising. It was by chance my boyfriend heard the announcement on the radio about two hours before the show.

Michael Ray //

Michael Ray, one of iHeart Radio’s On the Verge Artists, kicked off the night with a killer set. His radio single, Kiss You in the Morning is currently hitting stations all over the country and he has an EP available for purchase. If you haven’t listened to his EP, it is certainly worth a listen, or two, or a hundred!

Sam Hunt //

Sam Hunt opened his set with an acoustic mash up of two of his songs. When his band came out, they kicked off the party that Michael Ray lit up the previous hour!

The small stage was not the only place to find Sam that evening. He would walk off stage onto the smaller quasi catwalk addition that ran parallel to the stage. The crowd also got to experience Sam up close and personal as he ran back and forth along the fence. Mr. Leave the Night On also jumped up on the fence a handful of times to interact with the crowd in an intimate way. He didn’t only reach out to fans in the front row, but reached back to the third and forth rows as well.

If you’ve seen Sam this year, you know that he plays snippets of popular songs from mainstream radio in between each of his songs. Honestly, that was not this reviewer’s favorite thing, but it sure did get the rowdy crowd going!

About halfway through the set, Sam invited his band up front to join him on bar stools. The boys played artistically crafted covers of songs including She’s in Love with the Boy, Fancy, and Strawberry Wine. Damn Sam, you sure got the ladies loving you with those covers [not that you need any help with that].

When it was time for Sam to leave the stage, he wasn’t gone for long. The crowd grew louder than it had been all night as Sam came back on stage for his encore. He closed out the night by playing the keyboard and singing Make You Miss Me while his band was still backstage. His show came to a close after the band joined him back on stage to jam out to Break Up In A Small Town.

I still cannot believe this show didn’t sell out.

You can catch Sam Hunt opening for Lady Antebellum on their Wheels Up Tour.

What I Wore //
I paired my Route 66 tank from License to Boot with my blue paisley fringe kimono from Gypsy Warrior. Because it is still too cold for otherwise, I wore dark grey jeans with my cowboy boots.
